These two microscope images give a close-up view of the inner part of human intestinal organoids grown from stem cells. The one on the left has formed a layer of cells to line the hollow center of the HIO, with the cell nuclei visible in blue. But the one on the right has developed even further, just 48 hours after E. coli was injected into the center of the HIO. The cells of the lining are using their genes to produce proteins and carbohydrates that show up in different colors, and make up the cell-to-cell connections and mucus layer that protect cells from invading microbes.
