Simplified Representation of CRISPR-Cas9 in Action (VIDEO)
Caption
The "gene scissors" Cas9 (green, programmable nucleases) are designed to create cuts on the target DNA (blue) in a precise location indicated by the guide RNA (purple). In this study, the target of the CRISPR system is a mutation causing hypertrophic cardiomyopathy characterized by the lack of some nucleotides in the MYBPC3 gene of the sperm DNA. The mutation is then corrected by the cell by adding the missing nucleotides.
