Huiming Bao, Louisiana State University (IMAGE) Louisiana State University Caption LSU scientist, Professor Huiming Bao, of the Department of Geology and Geophysics, stands next to the specially designed laser fluorination line used to isolate oxygen extracted from minerals. This oxygen is then moved into the mass spectrometer lab next door where very precise measurements of the three isotopes of oxygen are performed. The ratios of the oxygen isotopes can be used to infer the ancient mineralogy of rocks prior to melting to form volcanic melts.
