A hydrogel developed at Rice University is designed to trap small-molecule drugs in hydrophobic spaces inside its constituent fibers. Earlier hydrogels release their cargoes more quickly by diffusion, while "missing tooth" hydrogels would prolong the release of drugs into the surrounding environment.
