Spherical Chicken (IMAGE)
Caption
A "spherical chicken" approximation to the bird lung showing how the back-and-forth air motions during inhalation (blue arrows) and exhalation (red) lead to one-way flow (purple) around the loop. The mechanism relies on flows near the junctions in the lung network and especially the marked difference during the phases of breathing.
