To Motivate Scientists: Prod with Computer (2 of 2) (IMAGE)
Caption
NYU Tandon researchers tested ways to encourage citizen scientists to increase their participation in their Brooklyn Atlantis project, in which a marine robot plies the Superfund-designated Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, N.Y., to collect data and images of wildlife above and below the water. The robot, in use since May 2014, will soon be replaced by one that is lighter, can hold a heavier payload of sensors, and travel further on a battery charge. The researchers found that competition from even a virtual peer can encourage participants to contribute more often.
