Florida Fort Was Home to Early Jesuit Mission (IMAGE)
Caption
Fort San Antón de Carlos, built in 1566, was home to one of North America's earliest Jesuit missions, but conflict with the local Calusa led the Spanish to abandon the fort just a few years after it was built. Researchers found Spanish artifacts such as a lead-shot mold, a hand-wrought spike and ceramics at Mound Key.
