Observing Surface Chemistry Diagram (IMAGE)
Caption
This illustration shows the steps in observing a chemical reaction, where molecules of carbon dioxide are excited and begin to break away from the surface of a catalyst – a crystal composed of ruthenium. An optical laser pulse (shown in blue) initiates the chemical reaction and a nearly instantaneous X-ray laser pulse (green) probes its early stages.
