Proposed model showing the two distinct sources of β-actin. The pre-existing β-actin is engaged in shaping the "skeleton" of the cell, while the newly synthesized one has just been translated in the ribosomes. The mRNA-LARIAT construct slows down the production of new β-actin by creating a protein-mRNA cluster (bottom right) where the mRNA, which carries the genetic information for the production of β-actin, is trapped.
