Annually layered sediments from Lake Suigetsu (IMAGE)
Caption
A couplet of dark- and light-colored layers corresponds to one year. The average thickness of annual layers is about 0.7 mm. Lake Suigetsu accommodates a 45 m thick accumulation of such sediments that spans over the last ca. 70,000 years. Using this unique archive, scientists can reconstruct past climatic changes in exceptionally high temporal resolution.
