One-kilobit memory chips based on silicon oxide have the potential to surpass the limitations of flash memory in packing density, energy consumption per bit and switching speed, according to researchers at Rice University. The latest chips have embedded diodes that prevent data-corrupting crosstalk between individual memory cells.
