The absence of STING in dendritic cells increases GVHD after bone marrow transplantation, while addition of STING reduces GVHD severity. Immune cells have specialized receptors on their cell surface that recognize antigens: MHC (major histocompatibility complex) on dendritic cells and TCR (T cell receptor) on T cells. When the T cell TCR binds to the antigen, the T cell then is primed to find the source of the antigen. In the case of GVHD, that is self-cells. When dendritic cells have more activated STING, GVHD is reduced. The exact biological mechanisms are being further investigated by the researchers.
