Lantern Fish (IMAGE) University of Maryland Caption A member of the lanternfish family, Myctophidae. These fishes were found to use multiple rod opsins within their eyes. Lantern fishes are the most abundant fishes in the world and show an incredible species richness. Differences in the size, number and position of luminous organs are commonly used to distinguish between female and male fishes as well as between different species.
