Scientists Prepare Sediment Corer (IMAGE)
Caption
Scientists on a research cruise prepare a sediment corer for deployment. The approximately 20-foot coring device will be lifted by a crane over the side of the ship and lowered to a depth of more than 2 miles, at which point the device will penetrate the seafloor and recover a sediment core. The length of the core would represent about 40,000 years of time.
