Experimental Room Setup (IMAGE) Duke University Caption The experimental setup of the localization study. A metamaterials antenna on the back wall emits a single radio wave frequency, which bounces around the space before being detected by the antenna mounted on the right-hand wall. The metamaterial surface on the left-hand wall continuously reshapes the radio waves so that it forms different patterns. By first training the system to know what these patterns look like for each of the 23 possible locations of a single triangular block, it can then distinguish the positions of three identical blocks placed in any one of the 1,771 configurations possible.
