Tiny and transparent mantis shrimp larvae provide insights into the mechanisms behind ultra-fast movements. Researchers can see muscles contract to slightly deform the exoskeleton and lock the arm in striking position. Releasing the lock snaps the arm out as the exoskeleton releases stored energy.
