Hydrocarbon seep in the southern Gulf of Mexico emitting a viscous petroleum, much like asphalt. Most animals found at hydrocarbon seeps, such as mussels and crabs, depend directly or indirectly on microorganisms that can oxidize the petroleum compounds.
