The slow motion video of peanut handling by Mexican Jays reveals that the birds shake the nuts, which create intertia cues that maybe used by birds to distinguish heavy nuts from the lighter ones. The birds also quickly open and close the beaks, which produces sounds that may help birds in distinguishing heavy peanuts from the lighter ones.
