Male and Female Colllared Lizard (IMAGE) Washington University in St. Louis Caption Females are more cryptically colored than males. To avoid recapturing the same lizards, the scientists sometimes mark them with water-based paint. The lizards may not lose their numbers until they shed their skins -- which might be the next day or the next year. The lizards overwinter by squeezing deep into cracks in the rocks like the one in this photo and have been known to emerge in the spring with a faded number still on their backs. Credit Alan R.
