A team of researchers from Melbourne's Walter and Eliza Hall Institute have shown cell death by necroptosis could be the underlying cause of inflammatory disease.
This finding could lead to future treatments for inflammatory diseases including Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.
The research team, including Ms Joanne O'Donnell, Dr Mottie Gerlic, Mr James Rickard, Associate Professor John Silke and Mr Joseph Evans (L-R), discovered that a previously identified molecule involved in necroptosis, called RIPK1, was essential for survival by preventing uncontrolled inflammation.
