Cape Evans Hut served as base camp to the ill-fated Terra Nova expedition to the South Pole led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott in 1910-1913. Early Antarctic explorers hunted Weddell seals to use their blubber and meat for food and fuel and to feed their sled dogs.
