Neutrophils Cause Obstruction of Eyelid Sebaceous Glands in Inflammatory Eye Disease in Mice (IMAGE)
Caption
Immune pathway that causes eyelid sebaceous, or Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). In the lymph node, T helper 17 (TH17) lymphocytes are activated by dendritic cells (DC), which involves interleukin-23 (IL-23). This activity results in IL-17 secretion that in turn is involved in the recruitment of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN)s. These TH17 associated PMNs in the conjunctiva result in pathological changes to the morphology of glandular cells and obstruction of the gland.
