Training Forestry Workers To Reduce Harvesting Errors (IMAGE)

One of the key components of the New York Botanical Garden's Amazon Forest Program is a training program for the forestry workers who identify trees, called mateiros. They sometimes have to identify up to 800 trees a day in mega-diverse forests with little or no formal training. After successfully testing two pilot courses, the Botanical Garden and the Brazilian Forest Service have formed a partnership to offer the tree-identification training program at a national system of vocational schools.
