Half Brains of Desert Locusts (IMAGE) University of Cambridge Caption These are the half brains of a solitary desert locust (left) and of a gregarious locust of the same species (right) at the same magnification. Computer-assisted laser microscopy was used to reveal the inner structure of the brain and highlight the regions where the synapses are found. Shown in cyan, lime and red are three structures within the brain that process visual information. The blue structures process odor information and are quite similar in size in the two phases. The orange and yellow structures, however, which are important for learning associations between odors and food, are much larger in the brains of gregarious locusts. Credit Swidbert R.
