Another Striking Image (IMAGE) Bar-Ilan University Caption Recapitulation of shingles (herpes zoster) in a culture dish. Living human nerve cells that were latently (silently) infected with varicella zoster virus two weeks previously were "shocked" into allowing the virus to replicate (indicated by the green color), mimicking shingles onset. Captured from a culture two, six and 11 days after providing the shock, these images show how the viral infection spreads over time.
