Arizona State University doctoral student Yun Duan prepares a sample of ancient rock -- late Archean Mt. McRae Shale -- for mass spectrometric analysis of its metal content. She works with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer in ASU's W.M. Keck Foundation Laboratory for Environmental Biogeochemistry.
