Sophisticated instruments, including laser disdrometers which measure precipitation as it passes through a fan-shaped laser-beam, collected data at McMurdo Station as part of the ARM West Antarctic Radiation Experiment (AWARE), a joint effort between the US Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation.
