Caption
A section through a pupa of O. surinamensis with the organs containing symbiotic bacteria. The Bacteroidetes symbiont was named Candidatus Shikimatogenerans silvanidophilus in reference to its ability to synthesize products of the Shikimate metabolic pathway and its close association with beetles of the silvanid family. It is stained purple by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH).
