There has been considerable interest along the West Coast in protecting and restoring aquatic vegetation as a means to reduce CO2 in coastal aquatic ecosystems. Coastal vegetated habitats hold some of the highest concentration of organic carbon of any ecosystem on the planet, and serve as a globally important sink for carbon (i.e., blue carbon).
