Samuel Hulse, of UMBC, takes a photo of darter habitat. He used Fourier analysis to compare the visual patterns on fish and in their habitats, and there was a strong correlation between the two. The work supports and expands on sensory drive theory, which emphasizes the role the environment plays in what sexual signals are selected for over time. Previously, sensory drive theory had only looked at simple signals, like colors, but Hulse and colleagues expanded that to address much more complex patterns.
