This is a scanning electron micrograph of the white rot fungus Fomitiporia mediterranea decaying wood. Like P. strigoso-zonata (other image appended to this release), F. mediterranea's genome was sequenced by the DOE Joint Genome Institute for the study by Hibbett et al published June 2012 in Science.
