UTIG's Laura Wallace and Demian Saffer were co-chief scientists on the IODP Expedition that revealed how rocks influence earthquakes. The team also installed sensor-packed pieces of equipment called subseafloor observatories (pictured), which continue to monitor temperature, fluid pressure and tiny changes in the Earth's surface near the subduction zone.
