Diagram of Exocytosis and Endocytosis (IMAGE)
Caption
This diagram depicts both exocytosis (left) and endocytosis (right). On top is a nerve cell that is sending a chemical nerve signal to the nerve cell on the bottom. Within the top nerve cell, vesicles -- which are tiny bubbles (orange) filled with neurotransmitters (red dots) move toward the end of the nerve cell and one (with down arrow) fuses with the cell wall and releases neurotransmitters into the synapse between nerve cells and toward a mass of receptors (red cross-hatching). The right side of the image shows a recycled vesicle (yellow) in the process of forming at the cell wall and then separating from it (up arrow).
