The engineered receptor was introduced into transgenic tomato to establish if it was sufficient to control water use. When plants transpire (release water to the atmosphere) it cools their leaves, so reduced water consumption can be measured by small differences in leaf temperature. The transgenic plants (bottom) show reduced water use when treated with the agrochemical, but not the control non-transgenic plants (top).
