Scramblase (IMAGE) Penn State Caption Scramblase redistributes phospholipids so there are equal amounts inside and outside of the cell membrane. When PS is expressed on the cell's outer surface, it can be loaded along with LDL cholesterol onto the protein apoA1 to generate an HDL cholesterol particle (shown in C), which takes the lipids and cholesterol to the liver for excretion or destruction. The molecular identity of scramblase is unknown.
