Carbon budget and cycling of inland water systems (IMAGE)

Inorganic carbon pool transformation processes mainly include the following: atmospheric CO2 that dissolves to form DIC, while DIC can also decompose and release CO2 to the atmosphere at the water-air interface; both DIC and PIC are transformed by precipitation or dissolution; PIC is eventually deposited in sediment and can also be released into water bodies from sediment sources. Organic carbon pool transformation processes mainly include the following: the organic carbon pool that is comprised of plants, animals, and microorganisms; plant microorganisms and animals can degrade residue, animals can ingest plants, DOC, and POC from water bodies, and microorganisms can also degrade animal detritus; POC and DOC can be buried in sediment through sedimentation processes or released into water bodies through biogeochemical processes.
