A tagged, juvenile marsh rice rat (Oryzomys palustris) captured from an area in Barataria Bay, Louisiana that was heavily oiled during the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill. Marsh rice rats are the reservoir host of a pathogenic hantavirus (Bayou orthohantavirus) that causes Hantavirus Cardiopulmonary Syndrome in humans. [photo taken in 2017]
