NIST’s Emberometer Measures Wildfire-Spreading Embers (VIDEO)

Flying, erratic embers may be the cause of up to 90% of home and business fires during wildfires and are difficult to measure in the field. NIST's National Fire Research Laboratory has set up an emberometer and firebrand generator system to track ember velocity and shape through a method known as particle tracking velocimetry. This research could lead to better data on ember exposure, and potentially the development of ember-proof materials.
