Synaptic remapping by electrical stimulation after stroke. (a) The connection between pre- and postsynaptic neurons are rebuilt by stroke and electrical stimulation. After stroke newly made connections are strengthened by electrical stimulation. (b) Incoming EPSP from presynaptic neurons and additional potential provided by STES induces a postsynaptic action potential following the presynaptic action potential. (c) The upper graph, raster plot, displays the spike timing at pre- and postsynaptic neuron (Pre- and Post- respectively). The bottom graph is the simulation result of two connected neurons with STES. When STES and presynaptic activation occur asynchronously, postsynaptic neurons do not fire (left-highlighted square). When presynaptic firing and STES occur together, postsynaptic fire followed presynaptic neuron activation (right highlighted square).
