Caption Lockdowns don’t work in Africa as a first response to a pandemic, says Economics Professor Nicholas Ngepah at the University of Johannesburg. His study of social measures that can contain the spread of a pandemic, included data from 53 African countries including South Africa. The first recorded case in each country to 4 January, 2021 were included. People shouldn’t have to choose between lockdown regulations and their survival, he says.
