Antioxidants are commonly used to treat patients with diabetes, a disease driven by oxidative stress. A new study in mice suggests that some antioxidant-containing diabetes medications may fuel cancer metastasis, raising concerns about their use in diabetic patients with cancer. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the 13 April, issue of Science Translational Medicine, published by AAAS. The paper, by H. Wang at Third Military Medical University in Chongqing, China, and colleagues was titled, "NRF2 activation by antioxidant antidiabetic agents accelerates tumor metastasis."
