Bacteria Film (VIDEO)
Caption
The video above, captured during a span of 113 minutes, shows that Pseudomonas (gray tubes) grow exponentially -- doubling their numbers roughly every 30 minutes -- and establish large populations of cells over the course of a few hours. In contrast, eukaryotic organisms such as the amoeba (large organisms) grow much more slowly and can be quickly overwhelmed by a bacterial population. The bacteria's ability to rapidly multiply in a variety hosts makes a Pseudomonas infection difficult to treat using antibiotics.
