Present day forest-grassland mosaic at Lake Kirkpatrick, South Island New Zealand. Paleoenvironmental records suggest that drier, mid- and low-elevation sites in South Island New Zealand such as Lake Kirkpatrick (rainfall 1000 mm/yr, elevation 527 masl) were more vulnerable to the impacts of human-set fires following Polynesian arrival c. 750 yrs ago.
