View down An Ultra-Clean Hot Water Borehole Drilled into Mercer Subglacial Lake (IMAGE)
Caption
Pictured is a view down an ultra-clean hot water borehole drilled into Mercer Subglacial Lake, a freshwater lake located beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Mercer Subglacial Lake is located more than 1000 m beneath the surface of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and is hydrologically active, meaning water flows through it to the coast, much like lakes on land.
