Heavy Icing Can Affect Arctic Tourism

An unusual rain-on-snow event in January 2012 covered tundra on Svalbard with a layer of ice that averaged 15.3 centimeters thick in places. That made it difficult for even snowmobiles with studded tracks to travel. Svalbard's winter tourist industry felt the effect.
