Fires Rage Across the South of Indonesia (IMAGE) NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Caption All across the Central and South Kalimantan regions of Indonesia fires rage and smoke billows off those fires. Reports from Indonesia point to both agricultural-based fires and forest fires being the cause of the flames. Recent reports show over 1,200 hot spots in Central Kalimantan alone. The haze from these fires is causing major problems in the cities surrounding them including hindering flights out of the area and causing respiratory issues within the population. The regional haze map issues by the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre shows significant haze in this area of Indonesia. This natural-color image was taken by NASA's Aqua satellite with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, MODIS, instrument on Nov. 1, 2014. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS's thermal bands, are outlined in red. Credit NASA image courtesy Jeff Schmaltz LANCE/EOSDIS MODIS Rapid Response Team, GSFC.
