OIST生物システムユニットの研究チームは、2種類の排水を処理する独創的な方法を考案した。微生物を利用することで、排水処理を進めると同時に、排水から大切な栄養素も回収する。同装置は、イオン交換膜で隔てられた2つのチャンバーを持つポリアクリル製の反応装置と3つの電極で構成されている。
