Hexagonal silicon (IMAGE)
Caption
The physics magazine Physics World recognizes 'Light from silicon' as the revolutionary new discovery of the year. They deem the work of the group of TU/e researcher Erik Bakkers to be the Breakthrough of the Year. The photo shows an array of hexagonal Gallium Arsenide nanowires. These nanowires are used to create hexagonal silicon, by growing a shell of silicon on them.
