Schematic Representation of a Centrosome (IMAGE)
Caption
This image shows a schematic representation of a centrosome. Two cylindrically shaped centrioles are surrounded by a dense mass of pericentriolar material (PCM) which organizes the microtubule-based spindle that segregates the chromosomes during cell division. B) Centrioles (red dots) at different stages of cell division. At the end of each division, the two centrioles of each centrosome are separated in preparation for another round of duplication in the next cell cycle.
