The charge-transfer complex formation because of benzoquinone conjugation causes color change upon alkane vapor adsorption. (A) Color change due to methanol gas adsorption and the structure (no stackings) of charge-transfer complex. (B) Color change due to n-alkane gas adsorption and the structure (stacking) of charge-transfer complex. (C) No color change in the case of branched or cyclic alkane gas molecule since such molecule is not adsorbed.
